Lis

Much as a vegetarian can get excited about Pigs Cheeks... I loved the blog. We all get stuck in our ways and habbits in life; and in relation to food this is often the case.

I just saw Jamie Oliver's TED 2010 award and it made me think how I am stuck in a rut with my food! Being a health practitioner I am always looking for ideas to bring to my clients and I think food might be the topic for my next newsletter, so thank you!

Can't wait to come around for dinner - when the pig is off the menu ;)

The University business has experienced an exponential growth over the past decade or so, fuelled by policy to make higher level education less elitist (and some clever marketing - courses in anything you fancy and access to cheap debt).
30 odd years ago when I first started work I found that the world is full of some amazingly clever people who would never contemplate a formal education.
Have the old elite have been swept away? No not a chance; employment of a graduate is no longer a filter of quality for employers. The new elite are the interns, graduates who are so desperate to gain experience that they will work for nothing. Mummy and Daddy may not have to pay the Uni fees but they will at least subsidise/accomodate/provide a car to get their child on the first steps of the career ladder.

I find myself getting very frustrated over the whole uni thing! My stepson went through a very tough time a few years ago; he started at Leeds and after a year realised the course he had been recommended was not right for him. He then started a different course and did two years before having to leave as his father and I could not manage to pay the tuition fees and he was making himself ill by doing 3 different jobs to try and make ends meet.

He was extremely tearful and low and we were very concerned about him, but I said that I was sure if he could somehow get a job in what ever role he could at the company he wanted to work for, then he would make it work somehow. After managing to get a job on the reception he was chatting to peple on the creative side (it is an advertising agency) and they realised he was a bright lad and that he could offer them a lot. He is now increedibly successful and it was a very hard slog and he was, of course, paid a pittance initially. But the point is that all of his peers were in the same position when they left uni with a degree and had to start from the same position as him (as with all creative jobs you can never go in at the top!), with the added problem that they had huge debts as well.

So I am a great believer that unless you are going to do a job where a degree is obviously necessary then a degree in media studies or toenail cutting is totally useless!

I am overjoyed at his success and my darling late husband had the joy and pride of seeing his son do so well before he died.

You mentioned people's attitude to money in your article. This is so important today and actually we should think how we are teaching our kids and what we tell them about money!

Hi Lis, after reading your post I believe that real inner contentment or happiness comes from within rather than from outside forces, such as money, property, clothes or cash. I heard a quote once by an entrepreneur who said that happiness or wealth is what you are left with after you have lost everything. It's what remains after all is lost. An essence of happiness that no one can take away from you. Thanks for your post, keep it up! x Lisa Cole
